During calendar year 2001 State courts of general jurisdiction in
the Nation's 75 most populous counties disposed of an estimated
11,908 tort, contract, and real property trial cases. Previous
studies conducted by the Bureau of Justice Statistics found that
a majority of tort, contract, and real property cases are resolved
prior to going to trial and that only a small percentage (about 3%)
are actually disposed of by jury or bench trial verdict.*** Footnote
